Christian Bettenhausen is a partner at Jones Mayer. Mr. Bettenhausen serves as city attorney for the cities of Placentia and California City. He is also the assistant city attorney for the City of Westminster.
Mr. Bettenhausen’s practice focuses almost exclusively on the representation of cities and other public agencies. His practice is primarily advisory and transactional but also involves land use and landlord tenant litigation. He is knowledgeable in most areas of the law affecting cities and regularly advises city councils and department heads. Mr. Bettenhausen has particular expertise in land use and zoning matters, real estate law, public contract law, competitive bidding, public works contracts, leases and development agreements, redevelopment law, affordable housing matters (CDBG, HUD, and covenants), drafting ordinances and resolutions, and airport law. He has been actively involved in the resolution of a number of disputes on large public works projects/buildings.
He regularly provides training to public officials on the Brown Act, conflict of interest rules, and the Public Records Act. On occasion he also handles probate matters and drafts wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents.
Mr. Bettenhausen received his undergraduate degree in business administration from Pepperdine University in 1989. He received his juris doctor in 1998 from Western State College of Law, graduating magna cum laude and second in his class. While in law school he served on the Law Review and received five American Jurisprudence awards in Real Property Law, Tort Law, Wills, Civil Procedure I, and Civil Procedure II. He has been with the Firm of Jones Mayer since July 2000.
Prior to Jones Mayer, Mr. Bettenhausen worked for the firm of Carroll, Gilbert & Bachor, practicing civil and business litigation. He also interned for Presiding Justice David G. Sills at the Fourth District Court of Appeal.
